Lucy and I appreciate everyone who came to our presentation at TCEA. Due to a time factor, we left out an important tool that you can use to combine your curriculum with literature.  We created a movie combining the idea behind BookFlix and StoryLine Online. We video taped a couple of 5th grade students reading the books, then we added scanned images of the actual book illustrations into the movie. We linked these movies to the beginning of a flipchart to connect literature to the curriculum activities. We want to point out that this type of media can be saved and viewed on a TV, a computer screen, a projector, or an IWB. Have fun incorporating literature into your own curriculum! Feel free to add additional sites!

An integrated curriculum is ultimately the best approach because it establishes student development of personal meanings through the use of rich context. Research has shown that children learn material best when it has meaning and usefulness for them. Literature is a way to give curricular concepts personal meaning. Use the sites below to begin integrating your own curriculum.

StoryLine Online

Once you get to this site, click on Continue to Storyline Online. The directions will lead you through the materials on the site. There are several books that you can choose for the students to listen to. Readers are filmed reading the book, much like they would be doing if they were reading to a class. Materials are also available for the books, such as Related Activities and and a downloadable (is that a word?) Activity Guide.

Highlights Kids

This link will take you directly to the Story Player. Click on the book of your choice to hear the story read aloud by other children. There are other links at the top of the page where you can access games, pictures, poems, and other links.

Childtopia

The stories that are found on this site are the classics. From The Ugly Duckling to The Three Little Pigs students can listen to these stories being read orally. One of the cool features of this site is that the books can be read in more than one language. Click on the flag at the top of the screen to choose the language you wan to listen to.

Students can click on the words to hear the story being read to them. When they click on the red words in the story, they can watch the pictures change to match the story. Different levels are available.

Starfall is a wonderful site with learning games and activities to help students learn. This part of Starfall will read the story out loud as the words are clicked on. Some of the stories have a speaker that will read the  book in stages. In order to track the words, they become red as they are being read out loud.
